My name is Catherine Cantieri and I am the new SELP Training Coordinator, which means I’ll get to be the one updating you with our SELPful Insights Blog posts this year! For just a bit of background about myself, I am a senior majoring in Human Resource Development and Psychology, originally from the Chicago area. I started my first student employment job at the U my spring semester of my freshman year, and have been working in different parts of the University ever since! In any case, I can’t wait to be in contact with all of the great student employees and supervisors here at the U that want engage and learn more about our SELP program!
What does SELP do?
Our mission here is to provide student employees with necessary tools and information to be successful both at their current jobs as well as in their future careers. The workshops that we offer cover a number of problem areas that employers have pointed out in relation to their employees, especially recent college graduates. We want to help make the transition from college to “the real world” as smooth as possible so that you can begin excelling and exceeding expectations from your very first day of work. The knowledge you will gain from this program will stick with you for years to come. If you want to learn more about our SELP program, click here to check out our website!
What is this blog all about?
- SDOs: Each month we will have a Student Development Outcome (SDO) we will focus on and we will share articles, videos, and stories about this Outcome. The SDO for the month of September will be Responsibility and Accountability. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to write a brief article about how as a student you have made progress towards this outcome, or as a supervisor how you have helped your student employees make progress towards this outcome.
- SELP Help: We are also looking for SELP Help questions. If you have a question regarding professionalism, email email@example.com and we will answer it on the blog! Questions we received last year included: how to ask for time off, how to send a professional email, and how to dress to impress.
- Recaps of Workshops: We will debrief each workshop and give suggestions for both students and supervisors for how to put what was learned in the workshop into practice.
- Updates: This blog will also give up-to-date information about the SELP program and upcoming workshops and events.
How do you get involved with SELP?
